CAQM forms expert committee to develop strategies for abatement of air pollution caused by vehicular emissions in Delhi-NCR

Heavy air pollution and smog engulfing India Gate in Delhi-NCR with vehicles moving on the road

With air pollution continuing to pose a serious challenge in the Delhi-NCR region, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has constituted an expert committee to formulate effective strategies for controlling pollution caused by vehicular emissions.

Vehicular pollution is one of the major contributors to deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR. The rapid increase in the number of vehicles, along with high dependence on fossil fuels, has led to rising levels of harmful pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. These pollutants have severe impacts on public health, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

The newly formed expert committee comprises specialists from the fields of transportation, environment, urban planning, and air quality management. The committee will focus on identifying both short-term and long-term measures to reduce emissions from vehicles across the region.

Key areas of discussion will include promoting electric and clean-fuel vehicles, strengthening the public transport system, phasing out old and highly polluting vehicles, and ensuring strict compliance with emission norms. The committee will also examine traffic management solutions, fuel quality improvements, and the adoption of advanced emission-control technologies.

CAQM’s initiative is expected to play a crucial role in improving air quality and creating a sustainable and cleaner transport ecosystem in Delhi-NCR. The recommendations put forward by the committee will help policymakers implement targeted actions to curb vehicular pollution and safeguard public health.
